Can employee engagement affect your company?
Employee engagement can be a decisive factor in your company's success, because engaged employees create engaged customers. To create engaged and loyal customers, it's therefore important that all employees in the company feel engaged. It may seem obvious to think this only concerns the employees who have direct customer contact, but in reality all employees matter to the customer's perception of the company. Customers perceive every direct and indirect point of contact as part of their overall perception of the company. That's exactly why it's important that all employees feel engaged in their work. But what can a company do to create engaged employees and, not least, keep them engaged?
How to create engaged employees
To create an engaged employee, it's important that the employee knows what the company stands for and what its core values are. It's important that employees gain a solid understanding of these values and of the areas in which the company differs from its competitors. Ideally, this should happen during the employee's first 30 days in the company. Studies show that up to 60% of managers and middle managers quickly gain this understanding, but that only 37% of other employees feel they understand the company's core values and how the company is different from its competitors in the market.*
It's the company's responsibility to make sure all staff, at every level, gain this understanding. One solution is to give new employees the chance to go round all the departments and be introduced to both the people and their work. This will give the new employee a more complete understanding of the work done in the company and of how the work in the different departments affects each other.
Use your employees' knowledge
Another important factor in creating engagement is making sure employees feel seen, heard and involved in the day-to-day running of the company. Employees hold hugely important knowledge about the company: they know what works and what doesn't in its day-to-day running. Studies show that as many as 43%* of employees have knowledge that could potentially improve the day-to-day running of the company, in the form of both time and cost savings.
Only 1 in 3 employees say yes to being involved in the running of the company, and they don't feel their opinions are heard*. So many companies miss out on this important insight and don't use their employees' full potential. To solve this, you can use a company like Mindpool. Mindpool are experts in “Employee business insights” and know what, when and how to ask employees to get the most useful knowledge. The survey also gives an indication of how the company will perform in future, so the company can see which areas, according to the employees, need development and improvement.
It's important that employees gain this knowledge and engagement in the company, as all staff have the potential to act as brand ambassadors. This underlines once more why creating engagement matters, as an engaged employee is more likely to recommend the company to people they know, and in this way the employee helps spread the word about the company, in their free time too.
